The Coffee Oasis Youth Center/Shelter

Bremerton, WA  |  October 2020  |  Designed by youth of The Coffee Oasis & Erica Applewhite

This project was led by the energetic and fearless Erica Applewhite for The Coffee Oasis. Paul, Center Manager, myself, and a handful of youth helped Erica in making it happen. Youth contributed designs and those were melded into this mural. Challenges included a tight deadline, an old building, and a very high surface to paint. The symbolism is a little too literal for my liking, but it was fun being a part of the action.

Kinder Mural

Cochabamba, Bolivia  |  March 2019  |  MoMo + Natasha Cross + Katrina Still Draws

MoMo a.k.a Tomoharu Suzuki (鈴木智晴), Natasha Cross (traveling artist from England), and lil' ol' me painted this large mural backing a basketball court behind a school. MoMo designed and painted the funky creature puffs with diamond orbs floating above their heads. Natasha designed the dragon-snake situation. They had a third artist who was going to paint children and had to bow out...that's where I come in. I added the flying children, and ended up embracing the pink outline. A magical glow, if you will.

The best part of this mural is that it was walking distance from where I was staying and an old woman regularly took me out for fried chicken. My Spanish wasn't great so I mostly nodded and agreed with her.
